cARTel Playwriting Workshop

cARTel is hosting a ten-week playwriting workshop for writers at all stages of development. We'll give you a space to share and develop your ideas and skills, with the help of a supportive group of peers and the guidance of two young, talented writers.

Kit Steinkellner and Matthew Chester are active and accomplished emerging playwrights who will guide you through the process of developing an original dramatic work. We'll work through time-tested techniques for story-telling, character development, structure and more, and help you optimize these standard tools to make them work for you and support your unique voice. Whether you've been writing for decades or are taking a stab at your very first script, solidifying your understanding of fundamental dramatic principles is bound to help.

This workshop will feature discussions, exercises, sharing, and more, building towards each member of the group completing a one-act play or the first act of a larger work. We'll be meeting in living rooms, and we'll ensure a comfortable and supportive environment.

We'll play, we'll learn, we'll hone our talents, and we'll all leave this group with both product and improvement to show for it!

Your Guides

As a playwright, Kit Steinkellner has been produced nationally, with productions Off Broadway (at Playwright's Horizons), the Kennedy Center, the San Diego Old Globe, as well as at several theaters in Los Angeles. Her writing has received rave reviews from the New York Times, LA Times ('Critic's Choice') and LA Weekly ('Critic's Pick!'). Additionally, her writing has been honored with awards from Stephen Sondheim, Edward Albee, Tim Robbins, Jack Nicholson, the Kennedy Center and the Sundance Institute.

Matt Chester is a playwright, screenwriter, improviser, actor and all-around modern man. He graduated in 2008 from Skidmore College with a degree in English and Theater, but more importantly he wrote the book for the musical extravaganza “King of the Lost Boys,” produced by AIDS Benefit in Saratoga Springs, the drama “Despite Everything” for the Skidmore theater workshop program, and “Epilogue” for cARTel's Living Room Tour. He also writes, acts and improvises with The Younger Statesmen, who can be seen Thursdays at The Improv Space, or on their YouTube page at youtube.com/theyoungerstatesmen.

How It Works

Workshops will be every Wednesday for 10 weeks starting December 2nd.

The time of day which sessions will be held will be determined by the availability of the group! So, if you can't make it until 8pm on Wednesdays, reserve your space and let us know. We will make it work.

We'll alternate our sessions between the Westside and the Silverlake area to make the commute easier on everyone.

We'll be charging $50 a person for this ten-week crash course. That's just five dollars a session to help offset the costs of printing, snacks, etc.
